About The Rocky Top Comedy Contest

The Rocky Top Comedy Contest is a stand-up comedy competition taking place over 5 nights (5 shows) spanning 5 weeks in Knoxville, Tennessee. 48 stand-up comedians from the Southeast United States will be competing for the title of Rocky Top Comedy Contest Champion.

There will be four preliminary rounds for the contest, each of these nights 12 comics will perform 5-6 minute sets and only 3 will advance to the finals. The Finals will consist of 12 comics that advanced from the preliminary rounds battling it out with only one winning the title of The Rocky Top Comedy Contest Champion!

The organizers and producers of The Rocky Top Comedy Contest are experienced with running and producing stand-up comedy contests including Port City's Top Comic in Wilmington, North Carolina now in it's third year.

How
is this contest winner decided? A: For the preliminary rounds audience members will be given ballots where they must decide their top three choices (top three comics in their eyes).  Three points goes to the first choice, two to the second and one for the third choice.  If the ballot does not contain three different choices that all performed that evening then it is not counted.  Each comic will also have to pick three choices for who THEY think did the best as well.  The comic votes count triple to the crowd votes.  This helps balance things out and avoid a certain "bringer" winner situation.

For the Finals, a panel of judges will cast ballots (with triple weight), along with all 12 comics voting for comics other then themselves and the audience will cast ballots again.
This system has been carefully tested and has proven to produce a winner that is not souly based on the amount of fans brought to a show or judge critiques of the comics performances.
